Beveiliging

With a good security camera (IP camera), you can observe anything. Do you want to keep an eye on your child, follow the beautiful processes of nature or stay informed of activities in and around your home? It is possible to see what is happening in or around your house live on your smartphone. But, what makes a security camera the right one for your situation? Below, you can read which security camera is best for you, your situation and your needs.

Hoe werkt een beveiligingscamera?

How does an IP camera work?

IP cameras, also called network cameras, are cameras that make use of the Internet Protocol. Wired or wireless. They can stream video images and sound directly through the internet. This makes it possible to view the images live from anywhere in the world, or to have them reviewed by security officers.

Some cameras switch to infrared when it becomes dark. Infrared is a light frequency that the human eye can't see. This is useful when the security camera is placed outside, but also for indoors when the light is off, for example.

Some IP cameras work with WiFi. This type of camera only needs to be installed and plugged in. Some cameras have an app for operating the device, you can watch it and zoom in live. If you use these, make sure to secure your network well, so that unwanted guests can't watch along with your cameras.

Security cameras indoors and outdoors

There is a difference between security cameras for indoors and those intended for outdoor use. Outdoor security cameras have to be sturdy and weatherproof. There are bullet and dome cameras. A dome camera is attached to the ceiling and is usually used indoors. A bullet camera is often used outside, because the lens of this type of camera is better protected against water and dirt.

An IP number is an indication of the degree of protection against external damage. The IP number has two digits: the first gives the degree of protection against objects touching and piercing it, the second the degree of protection against moisture. If you need to know the IP rating for weather resistance, look at the second digit of the IP number. The minimum standard for outdoor cameras is IP66.

Types of security cameras

A security camera can do so much more than just film intruders. For instance, it allows you to keep an eye on the children or your pet if you are not at home yourself. Some cameras have a time-lapse function, so you can easily create accelerated videos of a party or birthday for example. Which types are there?

Back to the beginning: the analogue security camera. The signal of this camera is transmitted analogue, through a cable. This was the norm for decades, but this technology is replaced by digital more and more. However, it is possible to digitise this technology.

Nowadays, almost all cameras are so-called IP cameras. IP stands for Internet Protocol, which means that the camera can communicate through an IP network. These cameras can be operated or viewed with a smartphone, tablet or laptop. In most cases, the camera is equipped with a microphone and in some cases also a loudspeaker, allowing remote communication with, for example, a visitor.

Determine beforehand for what purpose you want to buy a security camera. For example, consider the angle of view and the distance to the objects you want to monitor.

The advantages of an IP camera

Instead of the slow, old analogue security camera, an IP camera is easy to connect (often wirelessly) to a network. This makes it easy to view and manage the images from your computer. Other advantages of an IP camera are mostly its possibilities. For example, immediate storage of images to a (micro) SD card, immediate e-mail notifications, or live-streaming on your smartphone or tablet.
