ND stands for Neutral Density. An ND filter gives you more control over the light. For example, you can use an ND filter to create slower shutter speeds, use a wider aperture or compensate for the highlights in a landscape. This allows you to show movements and effects that the human eye normally cannot perceive. For example, you can give a mist-like effect or show the movement in the clouds.

Cokin Gradual ND kit (H3HO-25)

The Cokin ND Gradual gray filter kit is a gray gradient filter kit to balance the light intensity within a photo. You can use this in situations where you don't have total control over the light, such as in landscapes with strong contrast. Often in strong sunlight, the background will blur and the foreground will become too dark, causing details to be lost. This gray filter cancels out the difference in light intensity, so that a balanced exposure is displayed.

Cokin filter systems

Cokin is a French manufacturer of optical filters for use in photography. The system consists of a separate holder that is screwed onto the lens and into which square or round filters can be placed.

Cokin is best known for its Creative Filter System, which was introduced in 1978 by the photographer Jean Coquin. Where conventional filters are manufactured for a specific filter size, the Cokin filters can be used on different filter sizes (and therefore on several lenses) by changing a ring, which makes them cheaper to use. In the holder, up to three separate filters can be pushed in front of each other, which gives the photographer a lot of freedom in choosing his filters.

Cokin makes filters in different sizes: A (from Amateur), with a width or diameter of 67 mm, P (from Professional, 84 mm), X-Pro (130 mm) and Z-Pro.
