Especially when you start working with a less familiar form of photography, such as astrophotography, it can be difficult to know exactly which equipment and accessories you need. The telescope

With a camera, lens and tripod, you can get a long way. Still, a telescope is a good investment for professional photographers and enthusiastic hobbyists. This allows you to capture so-called Deep Sky images. These are objects that are so far away that you cannot see them with the naked eye.

The camera

The camera you use is not hugely important for astrophotography. Especially as a beginner, you can easily get started with your current camera to take some beautiful pictures of the night sky. Still, there are a few features to consider when choosing a camera. For example, it is useful if your camera has a tilting LCD screen, as this way you always have a clear overview of the image you are capturing. In addition, the option to shoot in RAW format is more or less essential, and it is a major advantage if the camera produces little noise at a high ISO value.

The lens

It is advisable to take several lenses with you when you do astrophotography. A wide-angle lens is very suitable for taking a broad shot of the night sky. For capturing a specific celestial body, it is better to choose a telephoto lens. Choose a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 or larger. This ensures that your lens can capture more light. For zooming in, a lens with a focal length of up to 300mm is recommended.

The tripod

A tripod is an absolute must-have when you get started with astrophotography. It is extremely important that the camera and lens remain completely still, especially when the shutter needs to stay open for a longer period of time. But what should you look for when choosing a tripod? The load capacity is one of the main requirements. This capacity must be high enough to carry at least one camera and a heavy lens. It is also a plus if the tripod can move with the sky. A tripod with a ball head is extremely suitable for this.

The remote control

A remote control is very important for astrophotography. It allows you to operate the camera from a distance. This means you do not have to physically press the shutter button, which could cause blur in a photo. So make sure the composition is as you want it, focus on the right point and all you need to do is press the button on the remote control.

Filters

Although filters are generally not recommended for astrophotography, there is one exception: night filters. The main purpose of these filters is to reduce light pollution. This allows you to take the most beautiful astrophotos wherever you are, so you are not dependent on remote locations to see the stars properly. An additional advantage of using a night filter is that it creates an even sharper image with more contrast and detail.
