The Panasonic LUMIX S 18mm f/1.8 is a super wide-angle lens with a 100° angle of view. Thanks to this wide field of view, the lens is suited to a variety of applications, including landscape, astrophotography, and architectural photography. In addition, the minimum focusing distance of 0.18 metres opens up more possibilities for close-up shooting. The optical construction consists of 13 lens elements in 12 groups, including three aspherical lenses, three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses, one UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lens, and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. The three aspherical lenses deliver superior image performance, while the three ED lenses suppress chromatic aberration. The wide maximum aperture of f/1.8 with nine Aperture blades also produces beautiful Bokeh effects. The lens operates smoothly and quietly with the camera's fast AF system, as the digital signal between camera and lens is exchanged at up to 240 fps. During manual focusing, the focus point shifts by a variable amount in non-linear mode, depending on the speed at which the focus ring is turned. In linear mode, the focus point shifts by a fixed amount depending on how far the focus ring is rotated. When recording video, a mechanism within the lens suppresses focus breathing. Combined with micro-step aperture control for smooth Exposure adjustment, this mechanism enables professional-quality video recording.
