2. Heligoland

When talking about the most beautiful places in Schleswig-Holstein, Heligoland can't be left out. This offshore island lies about 60 km from the mainland in the middle of the North Sea. You can only reach it by boat or plane, as it's a car-free zone.

When you set foot on the island, you get the feeling that time moves more slowly here. Peace and tranquillity, untouched nature and impressive flora and fauna delight many visitors year after year.

From the "Lange Anna" sea stack and the lobster huts at the harbour to numerous shops and museums, there's something for everyone. If you want to experience something really special, you can watch grey seals giving birth to their young on the dunes from the panoramic path. The park and café also invite you to relax, so you can spend a wonderful day here in the Sachsenwald forest. For particularly impressive shots of the butterflies and flowers, use the focus stacking technique from macro photography.

Thanks to its natural vegetation, Wildpark Mölln is one of the most beautiful places in Schleswig-Holstein. Young and old can go on a voyage of discovery across 22 hectares and look out for different animals. Around 30 animal species native to the region hide in the forests and cold waters.

Whether moor frogs, an eagle owl, wild boar or perch, the variety makes a visit to the wildlife park exciting. Hobby photographers can take impressive animal and nature shots here. Playgrounds invite children to let off steam. If you want to enjoy a relaxing picnic, this is the place to be, and there are also places to eat and drink.

As an important part of nature and animal conservation, the seal station can also be seen as one of Schleswig-Holstein's sights.

Enjoy the beautiful sight and watch the animals on land or through large underwater viewing windows. The station is open all year round, so you can be part of this unforgettable experience at any time.

6. Halligen

The Halligen are 10 small islands that rise only a few metres above the water. Because they're so small, they're also described as specks of land. Theodor Storm called them "floating dreams", as they can be flooded depending on the weather. Life on the islands isn't easy, as they're exposed to the forces of nature.

A visit to the farms and traditional buildings can be rounded off with a mudflat hike, a fishing trip in the North Sea or a boat trip. A visit to the Wattenmeerhaus on Hooge is also well worth it. Maybe you'll even get the chance to see the Halligen on a sightseeing flight, collecting memories from a different perspective with impressive aerial shots. Enjoying the peace of the islands and experiencing the rough North Sea makes a holiday in Schleswig-Holstein complete – great photos included.

7. Dream beach in Sankt Peter-Ording

True to the motto "back to the Middle Ages", Lübeck's old town enchants its visitors. The hidden passages and courtyards impress with their brick architecture. Of the original 180 passages, around 90 remain and can be explored on foot. Most of them are still inhabited and have a very special charm.

The unique old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. A city walk is definitely worthwhile, letting you admire all the important buildings and old walls. A visit to the Dosenmoor bog, a nearby lake or the wildlife park will also delight visitors.

The Sachsenwald is the largest continuous forest in Schleswig-Holstein and lies just east of Hamburg. Covering almost 70 square kilometres, it offers a good mix of peace and relaxation, tourist activities and places to eat. Cyclists in particular will love it, with a total of 80 km of routes.

Special attractions include the hay hotel and the climbing park, and the railway museum is attracting more and more visitors. There's a special connection to Bismarck, who was given the Sachsenwald as a gift in the 19th century, so you'll come across his name often during your visit.

14. Himmelmoor

The Himmelmoor in Quickborn is definitely one of Schleswig-Holstein's sights. The largest raised bog in the region brings visitors close to the sky, which is reflected in the water and offers an impressive view. You can admire this natural spectacle on two different hiking trails. The soft ground makes walking pleasant, and splashes of colour from flowers and plants make the scenery complete. As the area is being restored, more and more animal species are finding a new home. You can admire them in their natural environment and get a little closer to nature. The Himmelmoor is also a convincing photo spot in Schleswig-Holstein.

15. Glücksburg

Built by Duke John the Younger and now managed by a foundation, this moated castle can be visited all year round. Surrounded by the region's beautiful landscape, Glücksburg Castle is considered one of the most important castle complexes in northern Europe. The cultural monument is hard to beat for beauty, and thanks to the foundation its preservation is guaranteed.

Experiencing the atmosphere of Glücksburg, enjoying the impressive nature and attending great events are all possible at this unique place. You can also visit a museum on site or take part in a castle tour.

16. Holmer Sandberge

Visit the unique landscape of the Holmer Sandberge, the only inland dunes in Schleswig-Holstein and a legacy of the end of the last Ice Age. The 130 hectares stretch across dunes and pine forests that are home to diverse flora and fauna. In 2005, work began to uncover the dunes again after they had become largely overgrown.

The nature reserve is well served by hiking trails, so you can spend a relaxing yet interesting and active time. Not only the landscape itself, but also diving into the history of the Holmer Sandberge makes a visit worthwhile.

17. Rantzauer See and Schlossinsel

A trip to the Rantzauer See lets you enjoy not only the water and nature, but also immerse yourself in a fairy-tale world. A small bridge leads to the Schlossinsel (castle island), where time seems to have stood still. An ensemble of listed buildings creates an enchanting impression.
