Explore Scientific ED triplet refractor optics
The telescope has an aperture of 80 mm and a focal length of 480 mm. A bright f/6 three-lens air-spaced optical system. The optical system uses a centre lens element made of HOYA FCD1 (Dense Fluor Crown) glass. This element is equivalent to the HOYA FPL-51 ED (Extra-Low Dispesion) glass. This ED element provides superior sharpness and corrects colours down to the finest details. The optics are coated with EMD (Enhanced Multilayer Deposition) which ensures high light transmission and which reduces reflections to the minimum and reproduces very nice contrast.

The tube has contrast-enhancing ribs/partitions on the inside. The interior has a special black (dark) finish to ensure high contrast in combination with the dark background of the night. The tube has an extendable dew shield. This prevents dew, which falls on the lens in cold weather, from interfering with observation or photography. This dew shield also blocks annoying incoming light. The "dual speed 2" rack and pinion focuser" is rotatable so that the focuser can be used optimally in any position. The focuser is so precisely constructed that there is absolutely no back-lash. The right focus knob is dual geared with a 10:1 reduction gear for micro-fine and super-precise focusing. The tube is fitted with two solid mounting rings and dovetail for solid mounting of the tube. This dovetail fits any mount equipped with a Vixen-Style dovetail head as present on any common mount.
